Risk Analysis

Questions related to actual or perceived environmental risk to humans or ecological receptors often influence property transactions and environmental clean-up decisions. We assist our clients as they consider the relative advantages and disadvantages of conservative Federal and state risk-based cleanup criteria.

A risk assessment using USEPA guidance can provide more realistic exposure potential and bring the remediation goals closer to a realistic but still conservative risk-based clean-up. Our engineers and scientists work to understand regulatory requirements and client objectives for environmental risk assessment and risk-based corrective action decisions. We provide monitoring of air, soil, and water, as well as, household dust, and exterior structures and equipment. Our risk services also include data analyses for subsequent risk-based modeling to demonstrate the “actual” risk from a potential exposure pathway.

Case Studies
Chemical Exposure
Chemical Exposure
AquAeTer was retained by a client’s legal counsel to perform a human health risk assessment for skin cancers allegedly caused by exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) from a former wood treating facility. The results of the assessment were to be used in arbitration for the industry. The plaintiffs were alleging past exposure to contaminants […]
Ecologic/Human Health
Ecologic/Human Health
AquAeTer was retained by this client to plan and conduct an ecologic and human health risk assessment for an Affected Property Assessment Report (APAR) in accordance with Texas Risk Reduction Program (TRRP) requirements. The purpose of the study was to measure concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and arsenic in stream sediment deposits impacted by […]
Radioactive Waste
Radioactive Waste
AquAeTer was asked to participate on an expert panel to statistically and quantitatively evaluate the potential risk to human health posed by the continued presence of closed radioactive waste burial trenches at the Western New York Nuclear Service Center. The Quantitative Risk Assessment panel considered a wide range of possible scenarios under which disposed radioactive […]
