Brownfield Redevelopment
AquAeTer submitted a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) for the redevelopment of a commercial building located in North Carolina. The site was a Brownfield site which was formerly used as a gas station. The Phase I ESA identified the possibility of unknown underground storage tanks (USTs) on the subject property. A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Survey and sampling were recommended to locate the known and unknown USTs. AquAeTer conducted the next phase of surveying and sampling, which identified the four known USTs, as well as five previously unknown USTs and a hydraulic lift in the garage area.
On behalf of the client, AquAeTer notified the necessary regulatory authorizes and outlined a two-phased approach for remediation and site closure. The first phase included the removal of the UST and pneumatic lift systems that were known to exist on the site. The second phase included the removal of the new underground items discovered during the geophysical survey. AquAeTer quickly mobilized field personnel and subcontractors to begin remediation activities. The field team was on-site for approximately one week to remove a total of nine USTs and associated hydraulic lifts. As part of the site preparation, AquAeTer also conducted an Asbestos Inspection of three buildings on-site and oversaw the Asbestos Abatement prior to demolition. AquAeTer coordinated the necessary closure activities with the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR), Division of Solid Waste Management, and UST Section. AquAeTer completed the necessary closure reporting and our client was able to continue the redevelopment of the property as scheduled.
